Notes:
-Head and Overhook guard provides a degree of protection but you have to reposition to do much of anything. That's why it is often better to go to other guards. In Danaher's system generally tries to go to side scissor first. The problem is that the methods to go to side scissor generally require you to release the opponents head and work a two on one grip o the opponents arm to pull it across your body. This is fine in sports BJJ but for self defense it leaves you temporarily to be struck by your opponent. For this reason, it is probably better to move to side scissor from double underhooks guard or Pinch headlock guard. From head and overhook, i think it's safer to move to clamp guard instead.

-Once you solidly establish this grip the opponent, for the most part, can only do a few things:
1) Posture up (with you attached to his torso) by pushing off the ground with his hands
2) Stand up (get to his feet, then either (1) lift you up moving to vertical posture or (2) use his free hand to push your head control arm off then work on freeing his other arm)
3) Swim his arms inside to start creating frames
4) From knees, free his head by using his free arm to push your arm off of his head, then work on freeing other arm
5) His free arm is always available to punch you in the rips, especially if you are flat from any of the above situations.

No Or Little Upper Body Control: Closed Guard (Bottom)

I. Breaking Opponents Posture/Frames (Getting Grips)
A. Opp. Has Hands On Your Hips
1. Your hands cup the opp. elbows and pull
2. Your hands cup inside of opp. wrist move them outward

B. Opp. Has Hands On Your Biceps
1. Swim your hands inside

C. Opp. Has Hands On Your Armpits
1. Swim your hands inside
2. Chop down at bend of elbows or forearms

II. Opp. Punches
1. Demian Maia Knee Pull, Roll and Cover *example
2. Knee Pull and Front Cover *example
3. Knee Pull, Move to the Side and Front Cover *example
3. Knee Pull and Long Block *example
4. Go to Sit-up/Bump Sweep Position *

*Once you have pulled them in close using any of the above methods, secure a solid over hook or under hook grip. If unable to break posture, then go to wrist control. This allows you to monitor arms and gain limited upper body control.
