Primary Path
Wrist/Elbow & Head Grips to
1. Top lock

2. Swim for better grips

3. Stay in position & work sweeps and submissions

Notes:
In many ways this position most resembles the classic gi guard position where you have a grip on the opponents lapel and sleeve. On one hand, there are many techniques you can perform from this position. On the other hand you have less control over your opponents upper body. It is quite easy for them to push your head control arm off and establish posture. From a self defense point of view this lack of control translates to more opportunities for your opponent to strike you. As such, instead of playing the BJJ game and try to sweep or submit from here, in a real fight it will usually be best to get better grips or go for the top lock. If you do choose to work other techniques it's important to be active and not lay there waiting to react to your opponents action.
